So excited for this post! Today I’m sharing a super quick and easy DIY to transform your glass kitchen cabinets and make them look custom made.
Actually, the name of this cabinet insert design is Mullion (or Muntin), which it’s basically an accent glass door with narrow strips of wood that divide the individual panes of glass – or the grids that divide your glass kitchen cabinet!
For all the sources to my kitchen, make sure to check it out the following posts:
When I first order my cabinets, I was nine months pregnant, I saw the cabinets once and I don’t even remember if I paid attention to the glass cabinet.
However, I knew I wanted to have two kitchen cabinets with glass doors flanking my window to break up a little all the cabinetry and add some visual interest.
Kitchen Cabinets with Glass Door – Before
Once my cabinets arrived I noticed that the glass cabinets didn’t have any design on it, it was a just a glass! For some reason I thought that all kitchen glass cabinets had the same grid design as a window. Duh! They don’t!! So there it was my plain glass cabinet…
Upper Kitchen Glass Cabinets – After
Don’t get me wrong, I love my cabinets. But I couldn’t help to be a little disappointed with how plain the upper glass cabinets looked.
One day when I was scrolling through my Instagram, I saw this beautiful piece that Frills and Drills used a custom MyOverlay’s to create a cabinetry design. I’m very familiar with Overlays as I used them in my favorite Ikea Kallax Hack! I had no idea that you could order a custom design though.
Glass Door Cabinet Design Ideas With Overlays
I reached out to MyOverlay’s and we started designing the overlays for my glass door inserts. In a couple of days we settled on my design, the folks at MyOverlay’s are great to work with, they gave me a couple of design options to choose from and made it work with my cabinets.
Since my cabinets are white, I didn’t have to paint over the overlays, but this is something you can do it.
To apply the overlays it’s so easy! After I cleaned the cabinets I just used glue dots to glue the MyOverlay’s to it. That’s it!! Told you it was simple! Look at that!!
Mullion Cabinet Door
Now my upper kitchen cabinets have the most beautiful mullion insert. It makes my kitchen cabinets look custom and much more expensive, am I right?
I finally feel that my kitchen is complete and looks amazing!! The kitchen display cabinets with the overlays it’s the cherry on top!
With Love,
Ceres
What are they made of? Love how it looks!!
What a great idea. I have collected a lot of elegant depression glass over the years and this would be a great way to display. I started with the pink glass, then found the green and later the yellow. My only criteria being that it is etched. I don’t care which pattern; I love it all. Right now my spring table is set with pink hydrangea plates and both pink and green stemware. It looks so pretty. I plan more glass front cabinets for my new house.
These are so beautiful!

Thank you!! 😘😘
Gorgeous. Where did you get the pink plates from?

They are from ikea!!
Found a home we going to build and though it is not custom we get to pick out our cabinets and your kitchen being so gorgeous just reaffirms my choice of white cupboards. Just wish that glass doors were an option because your design is so beautiful.

Thank you Jayne! They don’t have glass cabinets? Ask! Most have it now! 😘😘
Those overlays made a huge difference. Took it from plain to interesting. I wouldn’t have know you could buy these if you hadn’t done this post. My bathroom has a large mirror and I’m wondering if I could do something down the sides to add dimension.

Thank you so much!! Yes, I don’t see why not, they can customize to your needs! 😘
Hi! Your kitchen is beautiful! I was going to do mesh radiator covers in the back of my glass cabinets to create some interest but this is a good idea!! Thanks! And also, I actually fell upon your page looking for a paint color to match my fabu galaxy frost cabinets and you did mention the bm paint for the trim but how about for the walls? What did you end up using?? We have a kitchen that’s open concept so this paint will be throughout the great room.

Hi Shiva!! The house was already painted white so we ended up matching that color to repaint the kitchen (to avoid repainting everything)
Hi! Do you happen to know where you got the “trophy” vases your peonies are in? They are gorgeous.

Love the overlays-can you share the price of each overlay? I want to do the same, but am concerned about price for a custom piece (my glass cabinet doors are not a standard size so only custom would work- 7.5” x 25”). Thanks for sharing!
Author
Hi lori, please reach out to overlays for custom pricing! They will calculate the price for you 😘

They are called @myoverlays
Are the mullions applied on the outside of the cabinet doors or the inside? If on the outside, are there cleaning issues? If on the inside, how would you suggest applying them for an invisible application (I have seen clear-ish adhesive squares and dots).
Author
On the outside, I applied with glue dots! Very simple.
What are “glue dots” and where can you get them? Is there a brand name I can ask for?
Author
You can find them at Michaels! They are used for crafts, just use glue dots! 😘
Love the look! May I ask if you recall the name of the tiles. I love them.
Author
Hi!! Yes! Is this one https://rstyle.me/cz-n/c4saxxb48gx 😘😘
Using glue dots… don’t they show on the inside when you open the cabinet? Maybe you put an overlay on the inside as well so they don’t show.

Hi Gina, they don’t show up at all. These are most for my display dishes, so is not a door I use very much. Thanks 🙏🏻
