Today I’m sharing one of the cutest projects I have ever done. The Costco playhouse hack! Since the first time I saw it on Instagram I knew I wanted to do one for Sophia, and now Olivia too.
This is not anything new, there are tons of great examples all over Pinterest. So I’m only going to go over the colors I used and what order to paint, and some tips that I wish I had when building my own.
I hope it will help and inspire you to take on this cute project for your kiddos!

Costco Playhouse Hack
There are many cute little houses out there,I picked this house from Costco, mostly because of the size.
I wanted to be big enough for two kids or more to play, but you can go big or small.
Also, I read somewhere that the plastic playhouses are more challenging to paint since you will probably need to sand it first. I have linked some cute ones below:
How to paint a cedar outdoor playhouse
You can built the house first and then paint or you can paint all the parts and then build. I decided to built first, and paint later. However, I wish I had at least painted the ceiling before assembling.
It might have been easier to do with the parts laying out, instead I got my hair full of paint 😂 as I tried to paint the inside ceiling.
Also, keep in mind, that I’m only 5.2, so I fit perfectly inside the house. But if you are a tad taller definitely paint before adding the ceiling.
I used Behr Marquee semi gloss in Crystal Cut for the house. And Pink Quartz by Behr for the door and the window nook.
Just make sure to ask for outdoor paint, especially if you are placing the playhouse outdoors like mine.
I sprayed the doorbell, mailbox and door hinges with favorite gold spray paint and all the red parts were sprayed white.
Assembling your playhouse
Layout all the parts in order per instructions. This step is really helpful! There is also a app to help you built.
I really didn’t use it. The instructions were pretty clear and I kind of enjoyed building the house. Then, follow the steps below together with the instructions:
1. Locate all accessories and door hinges, spray it gold/white or the color of your choice. Let it dry fully (its best to let it dry overnight).
2. Build the base and paint it (before adding the roof). I did 2 coats of primer and one of the white paint. I’m not sure I really needed the primer, but since I had leftovers I decided to use. You can probably just use the regular paint.
3. Paint the ceiling parts and door before assembling. This is going to make your life much easier!
4. Finish assembling the house and add your accessories. I added the door number to match ours and she loved it!
I will take more pictures once we add our fence. I was trying not to get my neighbors houses in the pictures! Hope you guys enjoyed!
This & your house is so dreamy and inspirational.

Thank you so much doll! ๐
We have the same playhouse and I’m trying to figure out how I could enclose windows so it will stay cleaner. Did you do anything with your windows?
Author
I didnโt, itโs outside so I figure it will get dirty. I do want to do some kind of flooring tho ๐
I used paving stones to set it on and a outdoor rug, but lifted it slightly with metal brackets from lowes. The brackets are made for outdoor post and lifts it about a 1/2 inch so air can circulate underneath to prevent rot.
Hi I also have the same house I am about to paint. Also want to do something to inside but worried about openings in windows. Damaging interior any ideas on enclosing windows
Author
Hi Jacqueline, mine is open and in the yard… Iโm not sure about enclosing them… sorry! ๐
You made an adorable little house for your sweet daughter. She looks like she loves it!
Author
Thank you Edie! She loves it and so does all the other kids in the neighborhood ๐๐๐๐๐
This is adorable! How many gallons of the Crystal Cut did you need? This is my inspiration for my daughter’s second birthday present! I just ordered a wooden playhouse and can’t wait to get started ๐
Author
Only one!!! Actually not even that… but I used leftovers primer that I had it. I think one gallon would be enough depending on size of the house! ๐๐
Thank you!
How did you get the roof that color? It looks white with undertones of gray.
Author
For the roof I only did one coat!! I actually liked the way it looked so I left it like that. The rest of the house got 3 coats!
I just love how you made this Playhouse! It inspired me to build it for my girls. I’m working on it right now.
So you left out the chimney and phone?
Author
Lol! Yes, I wasnโt really feeling the chimney, but I donโt know, I will spray paint and see if I like it better! The phone never made it outdoors, the girls play wit it inside ๐๐๐
How adorable! Everything is better pink! I love how prettily dressed your daughter is in the photos with her little baby hair all fixed up. I enjoyed dressing up my little babydoll when she was little too. Sheโs 21 now and still the love of my life. Enjoy!

Awwweee thank u!!! Once in a while she lets me do her hair and add a ribbon! Lol ๐๐

Aww thank you so much for visiting and the kind words! ๐๐
Love this playhouse! What did you use to attach the Star garland to the plastic? And where did you find the garland? My daughter has a thing for the night sky so it would be perfect for her.
I found the same star garland on Amazon. I hung some in my daughter’s room this past Christmas. I hung it on the canopy that I draped over her bed. It’s not weather-proof though which is unfortunate.

What did you use for painting the plastic ?
Author
Hi Renne, just regular white spray paint! ๐๐๐
So cute! Did you spray paint it or use a roller/brush?
Author
For the house I used a roller, for the plastic parts I just sprayed ๐๐
I noticed you said you built the playhouse first. How bad was it to paint after it was built? I have this playhouse but itโs old and now I want to paint it but a little nervous since itโs already built.thanks!
Author
I think the only parts you might have to be more careful with are the plastic ones (I sprays those before assembling). The rest it was better to paint after! Much easier ๐๐ go for it!
I just purchased this house and then the paint supplies from Home Depot. My daughter is turning 6 in October and she is going to love this. We had a playhouse someone built from scratch but it was a bit small and didn’t really withstand Michigan weather. Can’t wait to do this project and give it to her for her birthday! Yours looks beautiful!
Author
awww thank you! and happy bday to your little one! Hope she enjoys as much as we do!
This is so cute,! You did a great job! May I ask what house from Costco you bought? Thank you!
Author
Hi Wendy! I linked the same house via the thumbnails! ๐
I donโt see the costco link, but only target, walmart and amazon.
Author
Hi Jessica, Costco doesnโt link. You can just search for โplayhouseโ in their website ๐๐
Love this little house! Did you paint the white window panes or just used as they were?
Author
Hi Molly, the lanes where white already! Left it as it is! ๐
This is absolutely adorable Iโm thinking about doing this with my daughters play house. Did you use exterior paint or just regular?
Author
Hi doll! I used exterior paint! Itโs better since the house will be in the outside ๐๐
what an awesome project!
Author
Thank you Tina!!
Hi! This is so precious! I was just curious how the paint is holding up on the plastic parts outside? Did it require any sort of primer first?
Thank you!
Author
Itโs holding up great!! I used outdoor paint! ๐
Hi,
I was wondering where you found your gold accessories – the post box, number etc?
Thanks!
Author
The post box comes with it, I spray painted gold. The number is just a house number from Home Depot! ๐
